Dr. Jessica Zychowicz (University of Alberta)

Several strands of critical theory addressing gender in development and human rights discourse emerged out of Europe, North America, and the post-Soviet context during the end of socialism and the fall of the Soviet Union in the late 20th century. These strands have arguably led to contradictory meanings of democracy and rights by citizens' conflicting aims to negotiate and self-determine their priorities from within very different regimes, institutes, and societies. A new generation of artists, feminists, and queer activists burst onto the stage in Ukraine after the collapse of the USSR, shaped by their parents’ experiences of dissent, but whose ideas and actions were forged in the tumultuous decade between the two revolutions of the 2000s. Drawing upon original interviews, archival documents, and firsthand observations, this talk brings to life voices and perspectives from the “lost” decade between the Orange Revolution and Maidan Revolution of Dignity of 2014, in order to present comparative frameworks for understanding significant shifts in sociopolitical concepts of the body, feminism, and their global impact(s).
